These chewy red velvet chocolate chip cookies combine the classic red velvet flavor with melty chocolate chips for a soft, chewy, and irresistible dessert perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups (315 g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (110 g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1 ½ cups (270 g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons buttermilk (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Using an electric mixer, beat the softened butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar on medium speed for about 3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract and red food coloring until evenly tinted.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed just until combined. Stir in buttermilk if using.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips gently until evenly distributed.
  7. Drop dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets using a cookie scoop or tablespoon. Slightly flatten each ball with your fingers.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are set but centers remain soft. Watch closely from 9 minutes to avoid overbaking.
  9. Let cookies sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

Use softened (not melted) butter for best texture. Avoid overmixing after adding flour to prevent tough cookies. Chilling dough for 30 minutes helps control spreading and keeps cookies thick and chewy. Watch baking time closely to keep centers soft. Dutch-processed cocoa powder is recommended for richer flavor but regular cocoa powder works as well.
