A quick and easy homemade frosting made with marshmallow fluff and butter, creating a soft, fluffy, and lightly sweet buttercream perfect for cakes and cupcakes.

  • 7 ounces (198 grams) marshmallow fluff
  • 2 cups (240 grams) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons heavy cream or milk (optional, to adjust consistency)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Soften the butter by letting 1 cup (227 grams) of unsalted butter sit at room temperature until soft but not melted, about 30-45 minutes.
  2. Beat the softened butter on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until pale, creamy, and fluffy.
  3. Add 7 ounces (198 grams) of marshmallow fluff. Beat on low speed first, then increase to medium and mix until fully combined and smooth, about 2 minutes.
  4. Gradually add 2 cups (240 grams) of sifted powdered sugar, about ½ cup at a time, mixing on low speed to prevent dust. Increase speed to medium and beat for 3-4 minutes until fluffy and light.
  5. Stir in 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Beat for another 30 seconds to combine.
  6. If frosting is too thick, add 1-2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk, one tablespoon at a time, beating after each addition until desired consistency is reached. If too thin, add a little more powdered sugar sparingly.
  7. Give the frosting a final whip on medium-high speed for 1-2 minutes until light, fluffy, and holding soft peaks.

Notes

Use room temperature butter for best texture. Sift powdered sugar to avoid lumps. Avoid overbeating to prevent butter separation; chill briefly if needed. Adjust consistency with heavy cream or milk. For dairy-free, substitute vegan butter and dairy-free marshmallow fluff with almond or oat milk.
