Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks, 226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/4 cups (250g) packed brown sugar (dark brown sugar recommended)
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups (270g) semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup festive sprinkles (optional)
  • Optional add-ins: chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans), dried cranberries, white chocolate chunks

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking pan with parchment paper or grease it well.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat 1 cup softened butter with 1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar and 1/4 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 to 4 minutes with an electric mixer.
  3. Beat in 2 large eggs, one at a time, then stir in 2 teaspoons vanilla extract until smooth and slightly glossy.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet, stirring gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Gently fold in 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips and 1/2 cup festive sprinkles (if using).
  7. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula. Smooth the top without pressing too hard.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until edges are golden brown and the center is set but slightly soft. A toothpick inserted should come out with a few moist crumbs but no wet batter.
  9. Let the bars cool completely in the pan for at least 20 minutes before cutting into squares.

Notes

Use softened butter and room temperature eggs for best texture. Do not overmix after adding flour to avoid tough bars. Start checking bars at 22 minutes to prevent overbaking. Bars are best cooled completely before cutting to maintain chewiness. For gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour blend. Vegan version uses vegan butter, flax eggs, and dairy-free chocolate chips.
